I was one of Kelly McCausey’s blogging interns and happily completed the course. Now I’ve moved into a position as her master level intern for her business blog, Solo Smarts.
So, for the next six months Kelly’s got me by the short hairs! LOL
I asked her for her opinion today on something I did for my own blog. Well, she told me in no uncertain terms that it was terrible.
After taking another look, everything she pointed out was absolutely true.
Even so, it really sucks to have people you admire tell you what you’re doing isn’t right, isn’t good enough or just looks awful. But, the bottom line is I need to take in that constructive criticism to get better at what I’m doing.
We then went over a laundry list of other things that needed attention. Some were easy fixes and others are going to take more time.
I’m really glad to have someone who doesn’t hold back telling me the things I need to improve. How else am I going to become the best I can and want to be?
I’m going to tackle these projects next:
I took a WordPress course over a year ago and the instructor recommended Builder by iThemes. I liked her site so I thought I could build a great one too.
She did warn us that this was an advanced theme. So, this probably wasn’t the best choice since I was new to WordPress when I bought the theme and tried to build it from scratch. I did build a couple of sites before my current site but none of them were very good. I thought they were at the time but looking back they looked tacky and amateurish.
It wasn’t a real good idea to get a theme with a big learning curve when I was learning so many other things about building my business at the same time. Plus, I think it’s so much easier to have the code and widgets done for me in a pre-made theme. To that end, I’m looking into getting a new one. Hopefully will have that up soon 🙂
My about page is overwhelming. Why would someone who doesn’t know anything about me want to read such a long post about me? I’ll be revising and consolidating it to a well polished page with just the pertinent info.
Last but not least, actually probably the most important of all, is that my blog is way too bland. Too vanilla. I need to learn how to interject my personality into my posts. This has been a stumbling block for me from the get go. Now I have to work on letting my personality shine while sharing business ideas and strategies.
That’s what I’ll be working on for my own blog for the next couple of weeks.
I’d love to hear what are you working on. Please leave a comment and let me know.
I love to create graphics that make you sparkle and if you're a DIYer I want to teach you how to make your own. I'm dedicated to making you look good!
